As a child, Mrs. Sackleton wanted to be either an archaeologist or a librarian when she grew up. She feels fortunate to be working one of her dream jobs! It is a joy for her to spend time with your children and share with them the adventures found in books.
Karen earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and picked up a degree in History while employed at Lake Superior State University. She came to St. Mary’s School library by way of her children, both of whom have since graduated from St. Mary’s. She started by volunteering in the library for her service hours, and, after several years, was offered the position when the current librarian retired.
A few years ago, Mrs. Shackleton was asked to spearhead the school’s budding Latin program and eagerly accepted the challenge. Although she doesn’t have a formal background in the language, her background in languages in general has helped her in acquiring this new, yet ancient, language.
Karen and her husband Scott have two sons. Henry, 21, is in his first year of a Physics PhD program at Harvard University and John, 18, is a freshman at MIT. The Shackletons are members of St. Joseph’s parish. In her spare time Karen helps manage the family business, Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course. She also enjoys reading, spending time with family, playing cards and board games, watching basketball, and traveling. She still hopes to become an archaeologist.
