Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Today’s e-newsletter will be brief as I shared quite a bit last week, and today I am out of the office and in Marquette attending my son’s ordination to the Order of Deacon – a very exciting time for my family.

The news I do have for you may be found here.  This is a note from Mrs. Miller.

I hope you have a great weekend.

God Bless,

Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Reminder, Monday, May 3rd, SMCS will be closed (details below), and Thursday, May 6th, is our Jackpot Raffle.  Please turn in all sold tickets and money as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, May 5th.  This is our only required fundraiser as years ago we did away having several small fundraisers each year, i.e. candy bar sales, pizza kits, etc. because school families preferred one major fundraiser.  The Jackpot Raffle generates $50,000.00 for SMCS.  Thank you, families, and all who have sold and purchased tickets!   The drawing for the Jackpot Raffle this year will once again be recorded then shared on our school website and FB.  Once the recording has been posted, all winners will be phoned and names posted as well.

4th quarter progress reports go home Tuesday, May 4th.  If you have questions or concerns after reviewing the report, please contact your child’s teacher.  Thank you.

May is the month of Mary!  We honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, throughout the month of May.  Younger classes might say a decade of the rosary each day, some classes may study and learn more about the feast days of our Blessed Mother, and yet another way we celebrate and honor her is with the May Crowning.  The May Crowning will take place next week at the Wednesday student Mass as well as the Thursday student Mass.

Please don’t forget about Kindergarten Round-up, summer learning materials, and the 2020-2021 St Mary’s Catholic School year book.  Details on all three may be found below.

Please find the lunch menu for May 2021 here.

Appreciation Day

As many of you know, Pope Francis has named this liturgical year – Dec 8, 2020 through Dec 8, 2021 – the Year of Saint Joseph.  May 1st (which falls on a Saturday this year) is the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.  Bishop John and Superintendent Mark Salisbury have offered the schools in the Diocese of Marquette “a day off as a way to thank the entire community, beginning with school staff, as well as students and families for everyone’s awesome generosity, hard work, and teamwork during this very difficult year.”  This day of appreciation will take place Monday, May 3, 2021, which means St. Mary’s Catholic School will be closed on Monday, May 3rd; a three day weekend to spend with your family in honor of St. Joseph.

SMCS Kindergarten Round-up

Please tell your friends, SMCS Kindergarten Round-up will take place Tuesday, June 8th.  Each prospective student will attend round-up; each appointment takes approximately 1 hour; students are assessed in motor skills (skipping, jumping, cutting, writing), conceptual skills (knowledge of colors, counting), and language skills (knowledge of letters, words, ability to solve problems); hearing and vision screening will take place; and immunization record verified.  More information will come soon regarding scheduling an appointment and what a parent/guardian needs to bring to the appointment.

Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

God gave us an absolutely beautiful spring day today!  Physical education for many classes was held outside, recess was outside – plus extra outside recess for many classes, and Kindergarten even had an outside picnic.  I am grateful for every day we are in school and the weather today was just one more reason to give thanks!

The following is a review from last week, just in case you did not have a chance to read the newsletter or simply a reminder if you did.  We do not want anyone to miss this information.

Please send in sold tickets and money.  The raffle is less than two weeks away.  May 6th!  You are more than welcome to drop them off during morning drop-off or afternoon pick-up.  If it is easier to stop during the day to place them in the office bin in the south entrance, this works as well.  Thank you!

New MDHHS Epidemic Order

There has been an update regarding masks which primarily impact preschoolers.  The information is as seen below.

This order is an extension of the previous order, with one important change for child care providers. The mask mandate is being expanded to include children ages 2-5, beginning Monday April 26. Here’s what that means:
* The general mask mandate now applies to children ages 2 and up (instead of ages 5 and up). That means that younger children will be expected to wear masks in public places.
* The order also updates mask rules for child care providers and camps. Now, child care providers and camps must not allow gatherings unless:
* A good faith effort is made to ensure children age 2-4 wear a mask when participating in gatherings.
* Children age 5 and up wear a mask when participating in gatherings.
* As a reminder, a gathering is defined as “any occurrence, either indoor or outdoor, where two or more persons from more than one household are present in a shared space.” Previous orders clarified mask use in different spaces because the masking requirements varied on age and environment. This gathering definition includes all of the areas that were previously referenced (e.g. homes, classrooms, transportation, hallways.)
* Staff are still required to wear masks.
* License And Regulatory Affair (LARA) Mask Overview

October 7, 2020 Phase 4 Update

Good Afternoon,

Attached here is a letter from Mark Salisbury, the Superintendent of Diocese of Marquette Catholic Schools.  Within it you will find information pertaining to the Diocese of Marquette Catholic Schools, wearing masks, and Phase 4.  Please take a few moments to read it.  Thank you.

Mr. Salisbury indicated students in some of the diocesan schools have tested positive for COVID-19 which resulted in five classes among various schools being quarantined for a period of time.  Please know, St. Mary’s is not one of these schools.  Our school families will be notified of a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19 amongst students, teachers, staff members, volunteers, or any other person who was present on school property.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an epidemic order on Monday, October 5, 2020 which may be found here.  Additional information you may find helpful is the Emergency Order Under MCL 333.2253 – Reporting of Confirmed and Probable Cases of COVID-19 at Schools.

Finally, SMCS COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan may once again be found here.  We will be moving into the SMCS Phase 4 plans starting Monday, October 12, 2020.  A couple of weeks back to help prepare for this change I had indicated differences that were the most notable between our Phase 5 and Phase 4 plans.  Again, I note them below.

  • All students and school personnel will wear masks
  • All school personnel and students in grades preschool and up will wear facial coverings when in indoor hallways and common areas; students will wear masks when using the restrooms
  • All teachers and students in grades Kindergarten and up will wear facial coverings in classrooms.
  • Students will eat lunch in the classroom or outside weather permitting
  • The After school Program will cease.

Accommodations for off-campus instruction

  • Students in Kindergarten and up unable to participate in on-campus classes with their in-person classmates, due to either home quarantine or parent preference, will be provided course resources to maintain coursework.

As some of you are aware, another local school in the Sault announced this morning they are closing the school due to “one probable COVID-19 case”.  We keep that individual and school in our prayers.

Please continue to check the temperature of your child(ren) before they leave for school.  If your child is not feeling well, keep him/her home.  Please reinforce and remind your child(ren) of the importance of proper handwashing, coughing or sneezing into elbows, using a tissue when needed, using hand sanitizer, etc. and we will at school as well.

Please keep SMCS, its students, teachers, staff, and school families in your prayers, and know you and your families are in mine.

God Bless,

Hedy
