Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

We are grateful to remain open with face-to-face instruction.  We appreciate the families that have kept children home when ill as well as the families that erred on the side of caution and kept children home as they waited to hear about COVID-19 results.  These measures have helped keep St Mary’s open.  Please keep doing your part and we’ll keep doing ours – wearing masks, washing and/or hand sanitizing hands, social distancing, and cleaning/disinfecting.

Report cards will be issued Tuesday, November 10th.  Within the report card will be your parent/teacher phone conference date and time notification.  Please remember when speaking with your child’s teacher that she/he will need to keep each conference to no more than fifteen minutes in order to contact the next family.  Teachers may use timers to assist with keeping to the schedule.  If you need additional time to discuss your child’s progress, please make arrangements with the teacher to speak again another day.

Thursday, November 12th and Friday, November 13th are both half days due to parent/teacher conferences.  Staggered dismissal will take place from 10:30-11:00 a.m. on the 12th and 13th.

Face Masks
Starting Monday, all students will be required to wear masks.  Neck gaiters will no longer be allowed as too many students have difficulty keeping them up covering nose and mouth.  Please check that face masks cover your child’s nose and mouth before sending him/her to school – please adjust straps behind ears as needed to assist with keeping the mask in place .  If the mask does not stay over the nose, your child will be provided a different mask.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Face masks will now be worn during PE.  Our PE teacher is a shared time teacher from the Sault Schools and we are grateful to continue having this service provided to our students.  This is a requirement with Sault Schools via their school nurse and the Chippewa County Health Department.

Lunch
Sault Schools will continue provided the lunch program to SMCS.

Veterans Day
We will be honoring our military heroes and creating a bulletin board with photos of family and friends who are serving or have served in the military.  Please find the flyer here for more information.

Vaccines
Please see here for the vaccines required for school entry in Michigan as well as information on the Meningococcal vaccine.

Recess Help
We continue needing help with monitoring recess, especially Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Thank you very much to those folks who have been able to help!  Please see below for further information and the link to sign up.Family Vacation/Trips During This School Year
SMCS often receives word from families that they are taking a vacation during the school year.  Parents request the school work their children would miss while away so their children do not fall behind, and we have always accommodated these requests.  This year, due to Covid-19, traveling during the school year and removing students from school brings additional concerns besides falling behind in school work, and if traveling is planned, families need to know what to expect upon their return home.

Throughout the summer, many hours were put into planning and preparing for the reopening of SMCS.  Thousands of dollars have been spent to help ensure the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.  We continue to spend hours each day following through on our health and safety procedures such as cleaning, disinfecting, and monitoring the building in an effort to keep everyone safe.  Due to all the time and safety measures put into practice, the following expectancies have been developed regarding removing students from school and traveling this year.  We do not take these precautions lightly and we realize the additional burden they may place on families; however, in an effort to keep students, faculty, and staff safe, the precautions have been deemed necessary.

Any SMCS family choosing to travel out-of-state or to in-state hotspots during the pandemic will need to keep their children out of school for an additional 3-5 school days to monitor for Covid-19 symptoms once they have returned home (the incubation period is thought to be 2-5 days).  An additional responsible act would be to get tested after the incubation period.  A family seeking Covid-19 testing may find information here regarding local testing.  However, if during the 3-5 days after returning home signs/symptoms of Covid-19 develop, students are to remain at home and the family should seek advice from the Chippewa County Health Department.

Student Absences
Reminder – if your child(ren) will be absent, please contact the school.  Either call the office, leave a message if necessary, or email the office/your child’s teacher.  We need to know your child is safe and to not expect him/her at school that day.

Blessings for a great week!  Lots of color in the trees.  Could be a good week or weekend to come for a fall color drive.

Today we celebrate the Feast of St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
Their message goes out through all the earth.PS 19:2-3, 4-5

Friday, September 25th, is color day.  $0.25 donation to dress out of uniform.  Funds collected on color day support charities sponsored by the school, either Unbound – to support our student in Honduras – or Catholic Relief Services.  Please remember, students must follow the modesty guidelines as written in the student/parent handbook.

Monday, September 28th is picture day.  It is a FREE color clothes day.  Some families choose to have their child in our school uniform for picture day, while others do not.  Either way works!  As always, modesty guidelines are to be followed.  This year this will not be hard copy order sheets.  Instead, you may find the order sheet here.  Orders need to be placed online.

Please do not forget about recess.  We can use your help.  The link to sign up can be found below under the recess header.Phase 4 Possibility
You may have seen or heard that the governor has indicated the Upper Peninsula may move backward into Phase 4.  If this takes place, we are ready.  Phase 4 tightens some restrictions for St Mary’s.  Under Phase 4, as written in our return to school preparedness plan, students will eat lunch in the classroom, masks worn everywhere (essentially as they are currently), but a notable change would be to our After School Program.  If the Upper Peninsula or Chippewa County is moved into Phase 4, SMCS would no longer provide extended care/after school program while in Phase 4.  If the governor moves us into Phase 4, our families will receive notification from the school.

OptionC Parent Alert System
SMCS uses a parent alert system to send out notifications and reminders to our school families.  When there is inclement weather and the school is closed, the notification will come from OptionC.  Please complete the parent alert form and return it to the school as soon as possible.  Doing so will provide accurate contact information and let us know the method by which you would like the alert to reach you – email, text message, and/or phone call.  You will find the OptionC form here or please look for it in your child’s backpack.

Do not forget the works of the Lord! PS 78:1BC-2, 34-35, 36-37, 38

We enter our 4th week of school and our first full week.  We hope increasing the days each week helped students, families, and school personnel acclimate to being back in school.

The weather is looking to be cool this week, especially in the morning.  Please be sure to send in a solid navy blue sweater/sweatshirt with your child to wear if needed; the building is cooler in the morning but warms throughout the day.

If you have not completed the OptionC Parent Alert System information page, please do so!  We want to be sure we have your current contact information.  The link to the form may be found below.

Please consider helping with recess.  Sign up is easy and convenient.  The link to do so is found below under the recess information.

Happy Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sept 8.
(Isaiah 61:10) With delight I rejoice in the Lord.

School Mass
Our first school Mass is this Thursday.  Our school Mass time has changed to 9:00 a.m. to accommodate our classes sitting with social distancing.  Currently, it is a private Mass for our students only.  We begin with students in grades 4th-8th attending Mass.  Eventually, we will alternate additional grades into the Mass schedule.  We will follow the directions given by the Diocese of Marquette regarding Mass.  Click here to learn more.

Facial Coverings
Some area schools have decided students in K-5 classrooms do not need to wear masks.  We are not following the decision of other schools but rather the recommendation of area health departments.  CCHD continues their recommendation to wear masks in the classrooms; thus, we will continue wearing masks in our classrooms with breaks as needed while social distancing.

Health Screening
Please do not forget to use the health screening form daily to assess the health of your child prior to sending him/her to school each day.  Please remember, if a child comes to the office reporting to be ill, we will call you to pick up your child.  To see the health screening tool again, click here.

Art, Reading Support, Computers, Title I, Phys. Ed., Music, & Band

  • Art begins this week – Tuesday/Thursday; Mrs. Michelle Breen will teach Art again this year.
  • Reading support will be offered again this year to students needing additional reading support; Sr Peggy Fornicola (retired SMCS elementary teacher) returns this year as our reading support teacher.  If a student needs this service, based on testing and teacher recommendation, a letter from the school requesting parental/guardian permission to work with the student will be sent home.  The intent of this program is to work one-on-one or in small group in order to bring students to their grade level reading ability, then release the student from the program.
  • Computer class will be taught by Ms. Nancy Larsen who returns once more as a shared time teacher from Sault Schools.  Ms. Larsen is also our Title I teacher.  For those unfamiliar with Title I,  if a student needs some additional academic support, based on testing and teacher recommendation, a teacher may request Title I services for the student.  Typically, these services focus on reading but occasionally math.  The time allocated for Title I is minimal which is why we are fortunate to offer our additional reading support program.
  • Physical Education also begins this week with our PE day being Friday; Mr. Del Craven returns to us once more as a share time teacher from the Sault Schools.
  • Music and Band are on hold.  We will reevaluate these two specials near the end of the first semester.

Lunch
USDA Extends Free Meals for Kids Through December 31, 2020
On August 31, 2020 the USDA announced that all meals are free of charge to all children ages 18 and under following the Summer Food Service Program meal pattern.  This applies to all non-public schools currently participating in the National School Lunch Program and will continue at least through December 31, 2020.  Click here to learn more.

Birthdays
We are asking families NOT to send in any special treat or goodies this year for student birthdays; we will acknowledge birthdays over the PA during morning announcements per our norm, but will have students refrain from distributing treats to their classmates and teacher/staff.

Our first two days of school went well!  Thank you so much for your patience during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.  Just a note and friendly reminder to families using the drop-off lane on Armory Pl in the morning, please be aware of vehicles pulling into our parking lot to drop off our youngest students, our preschoolers.  No problems so far, but let’s work together to keep it this way; please look out for each other!

Fr. Nick Thompson celebrates his birthday today.  Happy Birthday, Fr. Nick!

Cleaning and Sanitizing
To assist with keeping our school as clean and healthy as possible, we have purchased HEPA filter air purifiers for each classroom as well as ultra violet sanitizing lights for each floor.  The UV lights are being used after school hours when rooms are empty.

Classroom Sound Systems
As we prepared to open the school we realized teachers would be speaking behind masks, making it more difficult for students to hear them.  To help with this, we decided to upgrade our existing classroom microphones as well as purchase new microphone sound systems for two classrooms that did not have systems.

Lanyards
An additional preparation for school opening revolved around ways to keep student masks from being dropped or lost.  To assist with this, we purchased mask lanyards for each student and adult in the building.  Snack/Lunch/Recess should prove a bit easier when masks are removed.  With the lanyard, a mask can hang loosely or it could be tucked into shirts.

HASA
Both the above mentioned purchases were made possible by our Home and School Association (HASA).  A big shout out of gratitude to HASA.  Please click here to see a letter to families from HASA.

Running Club
Due to the current restrictions, we are not having our usual SMCS Cross Country Team.  However, there is still an opportunity for our students in grades 4th-8th to participate in a running club.  Please find a note here from our coaches.
