Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Thank you to all of our families for donating non-perishable food items for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry.  Thank you to our 5th graders who walked the building collecting the boxes of food then delivering them to Fr. Romeo’s vehicle.  Thank you to Fr. Romeo for taking the goods to the pantry.

We had popcorn today to make up for missing it on the snow day during Catholic Schools Week.  Thank you to Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Miller for helping me make, bag, and deliver the popcorn to our classrooms.

Our second grade students whose families attend St. Mary’s Parish will make their First Reconciliation tomorrow.  Please keep these students in your prayers on their special day.

March is reading month.  SMCS will be reading Wishtree by Katherine Applegate as a read aloud in each classroom, Kindergarten-8th.  Parents’ guide to what is in the book, according to Common Sense Media, has Wishtree rated 5/5 for educational value, 5/5 for positive messages, 5/5 for positive role models & representation, 1/5 for violence/scariness, and 0/5 for language.

Included during reading month, we will have trivia questions each morning.  Students may turn in their answer on a provided strip of paper each day, students who answer correctly will then have their answer placed in a bin, and at the end of the day one of the answer slips will be drawn and the answer will be announced as well as the name of the student who answered it.  A picture will be taken of the student and the photo will go on the “Correct Answer Wall of Fame”.  We are excited about reading month and this fun little ed-venture.

Tuesday, March 2nd, is photo re-take day.  Any student who needs to have their photo retaken, or maybe for the first time due to missing the first school photo shoot, may do so on Tuesday.  Students who are having their picture taken may wear color clothes to school but will change into their school uniform once the photo is complete.  It is NOT a color day.

Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Ash Wednesday is next week, the 17th.  There will be a school Mass, grades 4-8 at 9:00 a.m.; distribution of ashes at the school to grades preschool-3rd following Mass.  As a side note, students in grades 4-8 will also attend Mass on Thursday, Feb 18th.

To help with your personal Lenten journey, please consider one or more of the following ideas.

As a school, we will be having a Lent Saint Madness.  Each class will read about two saints each day, and students will vote on their “favorite” saint daily; round one: 32 saints; round two: 16; round three: 8; round four: 4; final round 2 determining the winning saint and the Golden Halo awarded on March 25th.  We owe this fun and educational idea to https://www.lentmadness.org/.  Ours was tweaked with Catholic saints as well as to coincide with our school calendar leading up to Holy Week and spring break.

Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl will be sent home with students on Monday.  All funds families save in the rice bowl and return to the school at the end of Lent will be given to CRS.  For more information regarding the CRS Rice Bowl project, please visit https://www.crsricebowl.org/
We have early dismissal next Friday Feb 19th.  The afternoon is dedicated to parent/teacher conferences by request and they will be conducted via phone or Zoom.  The  staggered dismissal on the 19th runs from 10:30-11:00am.

Reminder: Monday, Feb 22nd SMCS is closed for professional development.

Catholic Schools Week Is Here!

Catholic Schools Week is here!  We are looking forward to a week of fun activities and learning.  You can see  the flyer here where you will find the schedule of activities for the week.  Please share it with your child(ren).  We have included 3 color days with one being a comfy pajama day (modest pants and tops).  All 3 days must follow modesty guidelines according to the dress code in our parent/student handbook.

Feast of St. Blaise

Blessing of throats will take place in the morning on February 3rd.  The Church recalls a miracle cure associated with St. Blaise and celebrates the blessing of the throats with candles.  St. Blaise was a physician and bishop.

Year Long School Theme

Our Catholic Identity Committee is initiating a year-long school theme as a way to unify the school year while building school spirit.  Our first theme however will be slightly longer as it will be the theme for the remainder of this academic year as the 2021-2022 school year. Our first theme is Family!  For the rest of the school year we will focus on Our Family – What does family mean?  What does family mean to you?  We will end our school day with the Family Prayer as seen below.  The opening line reads, “God made us a family.”  Over the course of the Family theme we will focus on different families: our school family, The Holy Family, the parish family, our community family.  Each day as we recite the Family Prayer we will be reminded of the precious God-given gift of family.

Family PrayerGod made us a family.
We need one another.
We love one another.
We forgive one another.
We work together.
We play together.
We worship together.
Together we use God’s word.
Together we grow in Christ.
Together we love all people.
Together we serve our God.
Together we hope for heaven.
These are our hopes and ideals.
Help us to attain them, O God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Catholic Schools Week runs Feb 1-5.  Please find the flyer here for further information.  We have included 3 color days with one being a comfy pajama day (modest pants and tops).  All 3 days must follow modesty guidelines according to the dress code in our parent/student handbook – color day specifics are as follows:

Color Days follow the same rules of modesty as Uniform Days in regard to the length of skirts and shorts, tightness of pants, and the requirement of sleeves on shirts, etc.  Leggings/jeggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans/pants may not be worn without a long tunic or skirt with length of either no more than 2 inches above the knee. Sweatpants are allowed on color day as long as they are neat in appearance, not tight, and do not have rips/holes.  Again, shorts are only worn during September, October, April, May and June.

Compliance with the Dress Code is the responsibility of parents and students.  For any violation of the uniform policy, parents will be called to bring appropriate clothes to the school for their son or daughter.  If violations persist a student may be asked to withdraw from the school.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Friday, January 22 is the end of the first semester and it is a half day so teachers may work on report cards in the afternoon.  We have the staggered dismissal from 10:30-11:00 a.m.

NEW PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

We have a new P.E. teacher, Mr. Brandon Tomkinson.  Our former teacher retired at the end of December.  I met Mr. Tomkinson today and he brings several years of teaching experience, he’s excited to be here, and I believe he will be a great addition to our school.

Happy Friday, SMCS Families!

Gaudete Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Advent – Joy.  (R) My soul rejoices in my God.

Congratulations to the Paoli family on their new addition.  Welcome, baby Holden!

Progress Reports will be issued Tuesday, December 15th.  If grades are not where they should be, please know your child has several more weeks to raise his/her scores.  If you have any questions regarding the progress report, please contact your child’s teacher.

Thursday, December 17th, is our school penance service following Mass.

Friday, December 18th is a color day.  $0.25 minimum donation to dress out of uniform.  Please remember, color day clothes are to follow the modesty guidelines as indicated in the parent-student handbook.

Traditionally at this time of year we would be completely engrossed in preparation for our Christmas program.  Also traditionally, our second grade class would end the program with the nativity scene.  This piece of the tradition will continue and will be part of our community outreach Christmas/Thank you cards; thus, even though our Christmas program will not be held, a piece of our Catholic Identity will continue and shared within our community.
