Welcome to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan!

St. Mary’s Catholic School is a kindergarten through grade 8 school. We offer instruction in all core academic subjects as well as religion, art, music, physical education, and technology.  We are currently transitioning to a Catholic Liberal Arts (Classical Education) Curriculum.

What is Catholic Liberal Arts?  Catholic Liberal Arts seeks the truth, goodness, and beauty in all things. This is because it is a reflection of God who is Truth, Goodness and Beauty Himself.  The goal of the liberal arts is wisdom and to produce a “vir bonum docendi peritus” a good person who is skilled in speaking.

We help students exercise the faculty of memory in classical poetry readings and memorization.  Latin studies help to train a logical mind, eloquence of expression and to improve English vocabulary.  Students study ancient Greek and Roman history to understand the foundations of Western Civilization.  An inquiry-based method of science instruction helps to develop a questioning, inquisitive mind.  A virtues program to develop individuals of strong moral character.  All this trains students to seek the truth in the world around them and to gravitate to what is good and beautiful.

Students are encouraged to reflect upon, emulate and express truth, goodness and beauty in the course of their studies.

Students in grades 3rd through 6th are taught Latin at SMCS; students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade receive an introduction to Latin through prayers and parts of the Mass.  Students in grades 7th and 8th take Spanish.

SMCS has a band for students in grades 4th through 6th.  Students in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to take band, when it is offered first hour, at the local middle school through the shared-time program.

It is our commitment at SMCS to teach the knowledge of the Catholic faith, centered in the person of Jesus Christ, with the values and traditions of the Catholic faith integrated throughout our curriculum.
