Happy Friday, SMCS Families!
Catholic Schools Week runs Feb 1-5. Please find the flyer here for further information. We have included 3 color days with one being a comfy pajama day (modest pants and tops). All 3 days must follow modesty guidelines according to the dress code in our parent/student handbook – color day specifics are as follows:
Color Days follow the same rules of modesty as Uniform Days in regard to the length of skirts and shorts, tightness of pants, and the requirement of sleeves on shirts, etc. Leggings/jeggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans/pants may not be worn without a long tunic or skirt with length of either no more than 2 inches above the knee. Sweatpants are allowed on color day as long as they are neat in appearance, not tight, and do not have rips/holes. Again, shorts are only worn during September, October, April, May and June.
Compliance with the Dress Code is the responsibility of parents and students. For any violation of the uniform policy, parents will be called to bring appropriate clothes to the school for their son or daughter. If violations persist a student may be asked to withdraw from the school.
Friday, January 22 is the end of the first semester and it is a half day so teachers may work on report cards in the afternoon. We have the staggered dismissal from 10:30-11:00 a.m.
NEW PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER
We have a new P.E. teacher, Mr. Brandon Tomkinson. Our former teacher retired at the end of December. I met Mr. Tomkinson today and he brings several years of teaching experience, he’s excited to be here, and I believe he will be a great addition to our school.
As you know, I send a separate school update regarding Covid-19 cases. Yesterday my notification read, “There is no new update for you this week.” so I thought I would add the news within this email. Great job, St Mary’s Family!

ALL RECESS VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE A DHS BACKGROUND CHECK, A BACKGROUND CHECK THROUGH THE DIOCESE OF MARQUETTE, AND HAVE COMPLETED THE VIRTUS (PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN) ONLINE TRAINING BEFORE VOLUNTEERING. If there is not proof of both background checks and completed VIRTUS training on file in the school office, you will not be allowed to help. Please contact the office if you still need to complete the two background checks and VIRTUS training.
Anyone who enters the building to help with recess will be required to check their temperature and complete and sign a health screening form. There is a designated health screening area in the entryway on the Armory Pl (playground) side. Please wear a mask, buzz into the building, sanitize hands, check your temperature, complete and sign health screening form, place completed form in the locked drop box, re-sanitize hands. Please maintain social distancing.
There are three mid-day recesses each day. We ask you to plan on staying for all three recesses; total duration one hour and twenty minutes; 11:20 a.m. -12:40 p.m.
Recess times are as follows (ten minute discretionary time is for staggering students leaving/entering lunchroom, building, and sanitizing eating areas between each lunch period).
Recess duty information may be found here.
