Dear Families of St. Mary’s Catholic School,

SMCS spellers who move on to the state competition in Ishpeming/Negaunee are Chris and Sam Kiekhaefer.  Congratulations!

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states during Lent we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season.  In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God’s gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: “Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).  Today, please find enclosed in your Monday folder the CRS Rice Bowl, a letter regarding this project, a Lent calendar, and regulations for fast and abstinence for Catholics during Lent.  May your family have a prayerful Lent.

Reminder: Mass is on Wednesday this week.  If you arrive at 8:00 o’clock or after, please take your child directly to the church.  Thank you.

Friday is color day and popcorn Friday.  Please return your popcorn orders as soon as possible so we may prepare.  Thank you!

Stations of the Cross, 5:30 p.m. at Holy Name of Mary Parish – soup and sandwiches to follow; St. Joseph Parish, 5:15 p.m. with a meal to follow.  Please find enclosures regarding seven reasons to pray the Stations of the Cross.

Our FIRST Robotic Team is presenting their robot and sharing the robotics program with students in grades preschool through seventh.  They are looking to recruit a few more members to grow the 2020 team and program.

God bless,
Hedy A. Yanni
